The trades market reflects the federal premium. Security officers earn $46,830 median — roughly $10,000 above what comparable security work pays in non-federal metros — because of the security clearance pipeline that feeds data centers, defense sites, and government facilities interchangeably. IT managers clear $195,190 and network admins $125,430, both elevated by contractor pay scales. The 16,580 electrician workforce earns $75,930 median, healthy but not exceptional given the cost of living.

For a trades worker, Northern Virginia offers more open roles in data center work than any other US market by a wide margin. The fit is strongest for electricians and HVAC technicians willing to commute to Ashburn or Sterling, and for security officers who can clear the federal-background pipeline that creates a structural pay premium here.
